First Class Sailing is a busy and expanding RYA Sailing School and sailing holiday provider.

We are looking for a Chief Instructor / Operations Manager to ensure we deliver a great experience to our customers and to play a key part in shaping the continued growth and future of the business.

The role is largely shore based with roughly ¾'s of your time spent in the office or doing maintenance and ¼ of your time spent instructing on the water. There could be an option to spend less time instructing. There is also a marketing element that could be fulfilled by a candidate with an interest/aptitude.

The role is permanent and based in Shamrock Quay in Southampton.

The requirements of the job make for an extremely varied and diverse role. You must enjoy and have a strong aptitude for multi tasking, often with interruptions. You must be suited to working within a small (expanding) business environment. You must hold an up to date Commercially Endorsed Yachtmaster Instructor (Sail) Qualification.

Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
  • Health and Safety of vessels and those that sail on her and the development of a safety culture
  • Recruiting, allocating, mentoring and management of instructors, other operational staff and volunteers
  • Vessel operations
  • Overall management of our vessels and those we charter manage, ensuring they are in compliance with our SOPs and MCA and RYA Coding requirements
  • Routine and non routine maintenance and annual refits, logistical arrangements and control of operational expenditure
  • Writing, reviewing and updating SOPs and Ships Manuals
  • Supporting the office/sales manager where needed
  • DofE Manager
  • Chief Instructor

Other duties may include assisting with marketing emails, social media posts, updating content on the website, writing blogs.

  • You need to have a strong customer service approach

  • You need a strong and broad base of maintenance skills and know how
  • A friendly disposition and able to build relationships with everyone associated with the business
  • An absolute can do approach, a willingness to get stuck into everything and a willingness to take responsibility
  • You need excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • IT skills. Microsoft Office, Mailchimp
  • You need to be a YMI Sail

Previous Experience

  • Sound background in sailing and instructing
  • Sound background in maintenance
  • Experience of customer service environments
  • Previous shore based experience desirable
  • If you meet these criteria, I am keen to hear from you.
  • Training will be given to get you started.
