At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life's better by water, and that the waterways we take care of have an important contribution to make to the health and well-being of local communities and economies. Our Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) helps make that belief a reality by minimising the risk of boat fires, explosions or pollution harming visitors to the waterways and any other users.

This role gives you the chance to make a key contribution to the development of the BSS, and to ensuring the scheme's strategy is successfully delivered.

About the role
Being the scheme's Business & Technical Manager means taking on an extremely wide range of responsibilities everything from overseeing the work of 170 independent examiners to ensuring all boat-related risks are identified and managed. You'll find new ways to keep risks to people and property as low as possible. You'll strive to improve quality management processes and procedures. You'll influence the development of standards and regulations for small crafts. The role also involves providing expert technical input and supporting the delivery of business, financial and budget plans.

About you
We're looking for a highly skilled communicator, presenter, negotiator, influencer and leader. A chartered engineer (or equivalent), you'll have worked at a senior level in marine engineering or in recreational craft design, construction or systems. You'll also have experience of quality assurance standards and processes, and of managing business, finance and budget plans. Some knowledge of relevant software is essential, including SAP and Salesforce.

About us
We're the charity who look after and bring to life 2000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation. Come and be part of it.

What we offer
In addition to your annual salary, you'll enjoy excellent holidays, a contributory DC Pension scheme and lots of other great benefits. In addition, many of our vacancies can be considered for people who wish to work flexibly.
